Did you know that most potting soils are made from peat moss?
Here’s the Bad News…
Peat Moss harvesting leads to:
- - More chemical and fertilizer use
- - More carbon in the atmosphere
- - More water pollution
Why do people grow with peat?
- - It’s weed seed and disease free
- - Has high water holding capacity (when infused with chemicals)
- - Has low salts and low pH
The problem is peat moss has relatively no nutrient value and will repel water naturally unless a chemical wetting agent is added to it. And it’s bad for sustaining natural soil microorganisms.
A recent United Nations report estimated that peat moss bogs in Canada, Russia, and Asia sequester nearly twice the annual CO2 tonnage of all Rainforests combined.
Check your gardening/potting soil to see if it’s peat. There are alternatives…
